WITH LESS than a week to prepare, the Lyceum-Northwestern University (L-NU) College-Y team still proved to be a deadly caliber to beat in the recently concluded Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA-Guanzon) Province-wide competition held in the Salvador T. Duque Fieldhouse, September 6.

Pegged on the theme “Empowering Young People,” the said affair saw different colleges and universities in the province battled it out in the eight areas of competition namely oratorical contest, extemporaneous speaking, on-the-spot drawing, essay writing, quiz bee, vocal solo, vocal duet, and dance sport contest.

However, due to lack of preparation, the L-NU College-Y team got no contestants for the oratorical and extemporaneous contests while one of the university’s representatives for the dance sport competition injured himself on training the night before the said affair. This made the university not qualified for the overall championship rank for not filling in all eight events.

Aiming high

Despite encountering such problems, the university’s College-Y team got impressive wins in the said competition with three of its contestants will represent Pangasinan on October 11-12 in Baguio City in the YMCA regional level after clutching the championship plum on their respective events.

The editor-in-chief of ULNOS, the official student publication of the university, James Dennis Tandoc, wrote his way to the top with his piece entitled “The Flourishing Man” in the on-the-spot essay writing competition, focusing on the importance of youth in nation-building.

Charmaine Feliciano and Mike Laudene Luna, both part of the university’s chorale group, added the last two golds of the team as they serenaded the audience with their rendition of the song The Prayer in the vocal duet category.

On the other hand, Cherry dela Pena wowed the crowd with her powerful performance of a known OPM song which landed her on the second spot of the vocal solo competition. The quiz bee team of the university composed of Archie Duque, Erwin Ortiz, and Marc Lavarias settled for the bronze award. Carolina Ladia was the university’s representative in the on-the-spot drawing.

The said team was under the supervision of Mr. Joshua Aaron Reyes and Mr. Gaudencio Callanta Jr.
